I came across an article the other day by Paul Tripp called Talking to Yourself, in which he wrote “no one is more influential in your life than you are, because no one talks to you more than you do.” If we are going to influence ourselves, then we need to speak truth to ourselves!!
Tripp goes on to ask a very important question: “how well are you counseling yourself”? See we tell ourselves things all day long, whether we realize it or not. How good are our thoughts and conclusions, information and reasoning?
Below are some sample thoughts you might have on any given day, paired with words straight from the Bible you can use to talk to yourself. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” So do a little check, are you preaching truth to yourself?
You say: I can’t figure it out.
God says: I will direct your steps.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
You say: I’m too tired.
God says: I will give you rest.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30
You say: It’s impossible.
God says: All things are possible.
But he said: What is impossible with man is possible with God. Luke 18:27
You say: Nobody loves me.
God says: I love you.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
You say: I can’t forgive myself.
God says: I forgive you.
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1
You say: It’s not worth it.
God says: It will be worth it.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
You say: I’m not smart enough.
God says: I will give you wisdom.
And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption. 1 Corinthians 1:30
You say: I’m not able.
God says: I am able.
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8
You say: I can’t go on.
God says: My grace is sufficient.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9
You say: I can’t do it.
God says: I can do all things.
I can do all things through him who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
You say: I can’t manage.
God says: I will supply all your needs.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19
You say: I’m afraid.
God says: I have not given you fear.
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7
You say: I feel all alone.
God says: I will never leave you.
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. Hebrews 13:5
